The following events are included in the Student Registration Fee.

Student Evening: Icebreaker

Date: Monday, 30 November, 2020 (tentative!)

Join us for a fun get-together and meet other students from all around the world. The evening will start with speed meeting activities at the conference venue and continue at the nearby cafe.

Student/Young Investigator Competition

Students working towards their Masters or PhD degrees and young investigators up to the age of 35 are encouraged to participate in the Student/Young Investigator Competition. Accepted full paper is required for participation in the competition.

Meet the Editors

How to choose a journal for your paper? What is a cover letter? Need a few tips on writing a successful paper? Come to our special session, where invited editors will share their editorial experience, explain the peer review process and present their journals. Have a burning question? Join the Editors from Medical & Biological Engineering & Computing, IEEE Journal of Biomedical and Health Informatics and Medical Engineering & Physics for a casual lunch after the presentations to discuss the publishing practice in a relaxed friendly atmosphere.

Please note that the attendance for lunch with the editors is limited therefore book your seat at registration for the conference.

Medical Device Design Competition

The medical device design competition is organized by the Education & Accreditation Committee of the International Federation of Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE) during the 8th European Medical and Biological Engineering Conference (EMBEC2020) in Portorož, Slovenia from 30th November to 3rd December 2020.

The focus of the competition is on the design of appropriate technology to improve healthcare in resource-scarce communities. The designs will be judged according the following four criteria: Innovativeness; Potential benefit(s) to the healthcare of resource-scarce communities; Low cost and ease of deployment; Viability of the design and potential to reach the market.

All team members must be bona fide students (undergraduate and/or postgraduate) as of 1st of October. The projects must have been carried out in the students’ institutions. Number of members per team can be up to 5.

IFMBE-Sponsored Medical Device Design Competition

Theme of Competition

  2. Potential benefit(s) to the healthcare of resource-scarce communities
  3. Low cost and ease of deployment
  4. Viability of the design and potential to reach the market

Eligibility

  • All team members must be bona fide students (undergraduate and/or postgraduate) as of 1st of October
  • The projects must have been carried out in the students’ institutions.
  • Number of members per team can be up to 5.

Competition Format

All valid submissions will be reviewed by a judging committee. Six (6) submissions will be shortlisted for the competition.

All shortlisted submissions of the competition are required to present and demonstrate their design during the EMBEC 2020 conference. Thus, it is mandatory that all shortlisted teams (or their respective representatives) must register and attend the EMBEC 2020 conference, failing which will result in the team being disqualified from the competition.

Awards

There will be cash prizes awarded to the 6 finalists:

  • 1st Prize – € 700
  • 2nd Prize – € 500
  • 3rd Prize – € 300
  • 3 x Merit Prizes – € 100 each

Each cash prize will be accompanied by an official award certificate.

Submission Process

All submissions must be done online via email: . In case of files larger than 20 Mb the usage of wetransfer (www.wetransfer.com) is nessesery.

Each submission should consist of:

  • (Mandatory) Filled and signed submission form.
  • (Mandatory) A pdf document with a maximum of 3,000 words and no more than 10 illustrations or figures.
  • (Optional) A video, not exceeding 5 minutes to demonstrate the working of the prototype. 

Important Dates (tentative!):

1st October 2020: Design submission closes

15th October 2020: Notification of shortlisted submissions

31st October 2020: Deadline for conference registration of shortlisted submissions.

30th November – 3rd December 2020: EMBEC 2020 Conference
